Bolt For Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run Raises $51K for Breast Cancer Research

Annual Community Event draws more than 400 participants to support lifesaving breast cancer research in Alabama

More than 430 runners, walkers, families and supporters gathered at Crestline Field on October 11 for the 2026 Bolt for Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run, raising more than $51,000 to advance breast cancer research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA).

Presented by ABC 33/40 and Thrivent and organized by the BCRFA Junior Board, the annual event welcomed participants of all ages for a morning of fitness, fun and philanthropy. Proceeds from the race will support innovative, peer-reviewed breast cancer research taking place across Alabama.

“Bolt for Breast Cancer is a powerful example of what happens when a community comes together around a shared cause,” said Beth Davis, President and CEO of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. “Every participant, volunteer, sponsor and donor plays a role in advancing research that saves lives. The funds raised through this event will directly support groundbreaking discoveries happening right here in Alabama that have the potential to impact breast cancer patients around the world.”

In the competitive 5K race, Ty Armstrong claimed first place among male runners with a time of 21:28.60, while Michelle Watts led the women’s field, finishing in 24:57.46. Complete race results are available online.

Following the race, participants enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities, including face painting, an inflatable obstacle course, a bounce house and soccer shootout. Refreshments were provided by Craft’s, brick + tin and Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company, creating a festive atmosphere for runners and spectators alike.

The Bolt for Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run has become a signature community event dedicated to supporting the fight against breast cancer. Funds raised help advance BCRFA’s mission to support collaborative, innovative, and peer-reviewed research focused on improving prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship outcomes, while moving closer to a future free from breast cancer.
