BCRFA 30th Anniversary: 30 Years of Funding Research…30 Years of Saving Lives
Over three decades ago, a bold mission grounded in urgency, compassion, and a determination to change the future of breast cancer took root in Alabama. Thirty years later, that mission still flourishes. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) stands as a powerful example of what sustained community support and strategic investment in research can accomplish.
A Mission Rooted in Hope
At the heart of the BCRFA’s story is a deeply personal beginning. The organization was founded in 1996 by Dolly O’Neal, an 18-month breast cancer survivor at the time, and Bruce Sokol, whose wife, D.D., was actively undergoing treatment. The two were introduced through the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, now the O’Neal Cancer Center at UAB, where their shared experiences with the disease quickly revealed a common goal. Both had seen firsthand the uncertainty, fear, and gaps in knowledge that come with a breast cancer diagnosis- and both were driven to do something about it.
What began as a connection rooted in personal impact soon grew into a shared mission: to fund research that could change outcomes for others facing the same fight. That passion became the foundation of the BCRFA, setting the tone for an organization built not just on science, but on empathy, urgency, and hope.
A Legacy of Investment
Since its founding, the BCRFA has remained committed to a simple but impactful mission: raising awareness and funds for cutting-edge breast cancer research right here in Alabama. That commitment has translated into meaningful, measurable progress. Over the past three decades, the organization has invested more than $17 million into breast cancer research across the state. Through more than 250 grants awarded, BCRFA-funded projects have contributed to over 300 published scientific articles, advancing knowledge and opening doors to new possibilities in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
What makes the BCRFA uniquely impactful is its strong connection to the local community. By ensuring that every dollar raised stays within the state, the organization brings the Alabama community together to empower local researchers who are tackling some of the most complex challenges in breast cancer. This system supports both the recruitment and retention of world-class breast cancer researchers, as well as the cultivation of some of the best and brightest minds the state has to offer. While the funds raised stay local, the discoveries and results from this work extend far beyond Alabama, contributing to advancements that are shaping breast cancer outcomes and care on a global scale.
One of the most powerful indicators of the BCRFA’s impact is its focus on early-stage, or “seed,” funding. These initial investments allow researchers to explore innovative ideas and generate critical data, often leading to significantly larger national grants. On average, the BCRFA’s funding yields a 10:1 return on investment, amplifying every dollar raised into far-reaching scientific progress.
Driving Discovery Today
Thirty years in, the BCRFA’s commitment to advancing research is stronger than ever. In 2025 alone, the organization invested $1.2 million into 25 research projects across nine institutions throughout Alabama.
These projects span a wide range of focus areas, from understanding the genetic and molecular drivers of breast cancer, to improving early detection methods, to developing more targeted and effective treatments. Together, they represent a comprehensive approach to tackling the disease from every angle.
Each grant awarded is more than a financial investment; it is a vote of confidence in the researchers working tirelessly to find answers. It is an opportunity to explore new ideas, challenge existing assumptions, and push the boundaries of what is possible in breast cancer research
The Bigger Picture: Progress and Perspective
Over the past three decades, the landscape of breast cancer has changed dramatically, and research has played a central role in that transformation.
Today, the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer remains significant, affecting 1 in 8 women and 1 in 726 men. These numbers serve as a powerful reminder of why continued investment in research is essential.
At the same time, there is meaningful progress to celebrate. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 44% from 1989 to 2023, a remarkable achievement driven by advances in early detection, improved therapies, and a deeper understanding of the disease.
These gains are not abstract. They represent lives saved, families kept whole longer, and futures that look different than they once did.
Yet, the need remains urgent. In Alabama alone, an estimated 4,900 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026. Each diagnosis carries with it a story, a family, and a reminder that the work is far from finished.
This dual reality- progress alongside ongoing need- is what continues to fuel the organization’s mission.
Leadership for the Future
As the BCRFA enters its next decade, strong leadership remains central to its continued impact. Under the direction of President and CEO Beth Davis, the organization is building on its legacy while positioning itself for the future.
Davis brings a deep commitment to the mission and a clear vision for how the BCRFA can continue to grow its impact, strengthening relationships with researchers, expanding community engagement, and ensuring that every dollar raised is used effectively to drive progress.
Her leadership has not gone unnoticed. Davis was recently honored as the 2026 Citizen of the Year by the Women’s Committee of 100, a recognition that reflects both her personal dedication and the broader influence of the BCRFA within the community.
Under her guidance, the organization continues to evolve while staying true to its core purpose: funding research that saves lives.
A powerful example of the BCRFA’s long-term investment in leadership excellence is the appointment of Anindya Dutta, MBBS, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics at UAB, as the holder of the O’Neal-Sokol BCRFA Endowed Chair at the O’Neal Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Established through a partnership between the BCRFA and UAB, the endowed chair honors founders Dolly O’Neal and Bruce Sokol while ensuring continued leadership in innovative breast cancer research. The position was previously held by Andres Forero-Torres, M.D., professor of medicine in the UAB Division of Hematology & Oncology, director of Clinical Protocols and Data Management Shared Facility and senior scientist in the Cancer Center Experimental Therapeutics Program.
Dutta’s appointment recognizes his significant contributions to the field and reflects BCRFA’s commitment not only to funding individual projects, but to sustaining scientific leadership for years to come.
Driving Impact Every Day: The Breast Cancer Research Specialty Tag
One of the most powerful- and visible- ways the BCRFA fuels its mission is through the Breast Cancer Research specialty license plate.
Since its debut in 2006, the BCRFA specialty tag has raised an impressive $6.44 million to support breast cancer research across Alabama- turning a simple choice at the DMV into a powerful investment in lifesaving work.
$41.25 of each $50 specialty tag goes directly to the BCRFA, and that portion is tax-deductible for tag owners. Today, with over 15,000 tags on the road, it ranks among the top 10 most popular specialty plates in Alabama and generates more than half a million dollars annually.
Available for cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles, the Breast Cancer Research specialty tag can be purchased at any time by requesting it at your local DMV. Annual renewals can be completed online or by mail, and personalization is offered at no additional cost.
Over the past two decades, the specialty tag program has grown into far more than a fundraising tool- it has become a symbol of collective action, connecting communities to progress in a tangible way. The tag allows supporters to see the impact of their contribution not just once, but every time they get behind the wheel.
In a mission fueled by community, the Breast Cancer Research specialty tag proves that even small, everyday decisions can lead to extraordinary impact
Fueling the Mission Through Community: Events That Make an Impact
In addition to the specialty tag program, BCRFA’s events have become one of its most significant revenue drivers, while also serving as a concrete connection between the organization and the community it serves. From sponsors and supporters, to attendees and volunteers, these events create meaningful, face-to-face opportunities for individuals and businesses to engage in the BCRFA’s mission and see firsthand the impact of their involvement.
Over the years, the BCRFA’s event portfolio has grown and evolved to reach broader and more diverse audiences. Signature events like the Drive Out Breast Cancer Golf Tournament and Pink Palace Casino Night have long been cornerstones of fundraising efforts, while newer additions such as the Revvin’ for Research Motorcycle Ride, Bolt for Breast Cancer 5K and Fun Run, and the biannual CahabaQue BBQ Cook-Off, hosted in collaboration with Cahaba Brewing Company, further reflect this commitment to innovation, bringing together local culture and philanthropy in a way that resonates with a wide audience.
Beyond BCRFA-hosted events, community-led fundraising efforts play an equally important role. Each year- especially during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month- individuals, towns, and local businesses step up in creative and meaningful ways. From initiatives like Calera Goes Pink, to businesses donating a portion of sales revenue, to individuals launching birthday fundraisers on social media platforms, these grassroots efforts amplify both awareness and impact.
Together, these events do more than raise critical funding- they build community, foster connection, and ensure that the BCRFA’s mission continues to reach new audiences year after year.
