One City, One Team, One Dream: Calera Goes Pink

CITY OF CALERA GOES PINK TO SUPPORT BCRFA

Birmingham, AL-The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) is proud to partner with the City of Calera, Alabama as they “Go Pink” for the sixth year to raise money for life-saving breast cancer research.

Throughout the month of October, the City of Calera, in partnership with CSX Transportation, will continue their annual initiative to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research in Alabama. The City will unite with the local public schools to host t-shirt sales, survivor recognitions, and invite local businesses to “Paint the Town Pink” by decorating their offices for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On October 7th, Calera High School will host the Jemison Panthers at Ricky Cairns Stadium for the annual Calera Goes Pink football game. Calera High School teachers will be hopping in a dunking booth to raise funds for research, and art students will be spray painting hair pink throughout the evening.

A new component of this year’s Calera Goes Pink initiative is taking breast cancer research from the lab to the classroom, talking with Calera High School students about the practical application behind the science of breast cancer research. The students will learn about different aspects of research that their efforts fund, including immunotherapy, drug discovery, and the Dolly Ashton O’Neal Triple Negative Breast Cancer Personalized Medicine Program.

The month of pink will culminate with the Calera Goes Pink Golf Tournament on Sunday, October 23rd. Proceeds from the tournament, presented by the Executive Women’s Golf Association in partnership with CSX Transportation, will also support BCRFA.

“We’re very proud that since 2011 the City of Calera has raised almost $150,000 in community support for BCRFA,” says Mayor Jon Graham. “The unity of the City, our schools, local businesses, and Calera residents allow us to grow our fundraising efforts for breast cancer research each year.”

Kate Kiefer, Board of Directors President for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama said, “Calera has united to create an amazing grassroots effort to fund breast cancer research and save lives. This year’s theme of ‘one city, one dream, one team’ makes #CaleraUnited a model for community support behind this great cause.”

Net proceeds from all events will help the BCRFA provide the critical seed dollars required to secure national breast cancer research grants.  All research dollars raised in Alabama will stay in Alabama, but the research and new treatments discovered reach breast cancer patients across the nation.
