Funds for Two Collaborative Research Projects in Alabama

“It Takes a Village like Calera” to Fund Research and Save Lives

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) partnered with the City of Calera, Alabama to “Go Pink” for the eighth year. This annual event raised almost $44,000 in community support for the BCRFA. Proceeds from the month-long initiative fund breast cancer research in Alabama.

Throughout the month of October, the City of Calera continued their annual tradition of engaging the community to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research in Alabama. The City united with the local public schools to host t-shirt sales, school dances, pink trinket sales, and more.

Calera High school hosted their annual pink football game, facing off against the Opelika Bulldogs. The month of pink culminated with the “Calera Goes Pink!” Golf Tournament, presented by the LPGA Amateur Golf Association-Birmingham, also supporting BCRFA. 

Money raised from Calera Goes Pink helps fund different research initiatives including immunotherapy, drug discovery, and the Dolly Ashton O’Neal Triple Negative Breast Cancer Personalized Medicine Program.

“We’re very proud that since 2011 the City of Calera has raised over $295,000 in community support for BCRFA,” says Mayor Jon Graham. “The unity of the City, our schools, local businesses, and Calera residents allow us to grow our fundraising efforts for breast cancer research each year.”

Kate Kiefer, Board of Directors member for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama said, “Calera has united to create an amazing grassroots effort to fund breast cancer research and save lives. This year’s theme of ‘It takes a village like Calera’ makes Calera a model for community support behind this great cause.”

Also taking place in Shelby County in October was the annual Chelsea High School and Helena High Schools pink game. Through t-shirt sales, over $5,000 was raised for the BCRFA, bringing the total raised in Shelby County through these two annual initiatives to just over $49,000.

All BCRFA research dollars raised in Alabama will stay in Alabama, but the research and new treatments discovered reach breast cancer patients across the nation.
