Community partners across Alabama aim to fund breast cancer research in October
Organizations statewide are going pink this Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October, also known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is a national initiative marked by unity, support, and a wave of pink across the country. Alabama is no exception. In Alabama, businesses and organizations are coming together to raise funds for pivotal, local breast cancer research. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) has partnered with over 30 unique organizations, ranging from schools and banks to car dealerships and kickboxing studios, who are all ready to make a huge impact. The funds raised by these organizations will support innovative research in breast cancer diagnostics, therapies, and prevention methods, ultimately saving lives. Every dollar stays in Alabama, but the impact is worldwide.
“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama is excited to support local research and awareness efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and is grateful to those joining us in the fight against breast cancer,” said Beth Davis, President & CEO.” She continued, “Seeing our partners dedicated to this mission is greatly inspiring and gives me hope for a brighter future for those diagnosed with breast cancer, made possible through funding groundbreaking research.”
The BCRFA invested $1.125 million in 22 unique projects across seven established Alabama institutions in 2024, made possible in part because of its Breast Cancer Awareness Month partners. The organization has plans to announce its 2025 grant awards in December, once again demonstrating its continued commitment to funding lifesaving research.
“Investing in research remains essential,” continued Davis. “But Breast Cancer Awareness month also reminds us to champion survivors, remember loved ones who bravely fought, and encourages our communities to take action against breast cancer, together.”
One in eight women and one in 726 men will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Almost 5,000 women will be diagnosed this year in Alabama. Fortunately, significant progress in research and early detection methods has led to a steady decline in breast cancer deaths. While 30 years ago 4 out of 5 patients did not survive the disease, survival rates have now been reversed. Today, 4 out 5 patients overcome a diagnosis.
The BCRFA looks forward to partnering with individuals, alongside business and community partners committed to advancing life-saving research across Alabama. Individuals can participate in each of the community events below. Additional opportunities to support the BCRFA include making a donation, purchasing the Breast Cancer Research license plate, wearing pink apparel from the BCRFA store, or creating a fundraiser.
