BCRFA Offers More Funding for Collaborative Research

BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF ALABAMA (BCRFA) ANNOUNCES FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR COLLABORATIVE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

Birmingham, Ala. — The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) is currently accepting proposals for two-year collaborative breast cancer research awards among research entities within the state of Alabama.

Projects may focus on any area of breast cancer research, which may include, but is not limited to: personalized medicine, prevention, early detection, drug discovery, immunotherapy, genomics and new breast cancer treatments.

Two grants will be awarded – one award is offered to a collaborative partnership with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a second award is being offered to a collaborative proposal between any two research entities in Alabama. The approved projects will receive each $50,000 annually for two consecutive years, totaling $100,000 of support to each of the selected projects.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama is a nonprofit organization raising funding and awareness for breast cancer research in Alabama.

“Since the organization began in 1996, the BCRFA has invested over $6.75 million in breast cancer research initiatives in Alabama. This year, we are excited to be able to offer two awards supporting collaborative breast cancer research,” stated Beth Bradner Davis, BCRFA executive director. “Individual, corporate, and foundation support enable the BCRFA to fund one – or more – BCRFA Collaboration Awards each year.”

The goals for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama Collaboration Award are as follows: to encourage collaborative research among top researchers in Alabama in the field of breast cancer research; to help support basic research which can be emerge into translational research; to offer financial support to promising breast cancer research in Alabama helping fund initial research so that the project can support future funding from national funders; and to offer hope to those affected by breast cancer and ultimately save lives through breast cancer research.

Last year’s inaugural BCRFA Collaboration Award funded a collaboration between HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology‘s Sara Cooper, PhD and UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center‘s Donald Buchsbaum, PhD. Their research project explores patient response to immunotherapy.

Proposals must be submitted for consideration to the BCRFA by August 31. The $50,000 per year is awarded for items such as researchers’ time, supplies and core facility fees, etc. The Collaboration Award will not support indirect costs. To request a copy of the submission guidelines and further details on the inaugural award, please call 205-996-5463 or email [email protected].
