BCRFA Announces 2019 Funding Opportunities

Birmingham, Ala. — The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) is currently accepting proposals for breast cancer research grants. The 2019 BCRFA Pilot Grant Awards opportunity includes four award categories for breast cancer research for research entities within the state of Alabama. Unless otherwise noted, projects may focus on any area of breast cancer research, which may include, but is not limited to: personalized medicine, prevention, early detection, drug discovery, immunology/immunotherapy, genomics and new breast cancer treatments.

2019 BCRFA funding opportunities include: one BCRFA Scholar Award – one mentored career development two-year award of $100,000 for junior faculty; two BCRFA Collaboration Awards for Immunology/Immunotherapy – $70,000 two-year awards supporting collaborative research among multiple Alabama research institutions; two BCRFA Innovation Awards – $50,000 seed grants for new investigators to explore innovative ideas; and two BCRFA Impact Grants – $70,000 awards for accomplished researchers to leverage ongoing studies to generate preliminary data to support an application for extramural, peer-reviewed funding.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama is a Birmingham-based nonprofit organization raising funding and awareness for breast cancer research across Alabama.

“Since the organization began in 1996, the BCRFA has invested over $8.7 million in breast cancer research initiatives in Alabama. This year, we are excited to be able to offer multiple funding opportunities designed to advance breast cancer research in Alabama and improve patient outcomes,” stated Beth Bradner Davis, BCRFA executive director. “Individual, corporate, and foundation support make this strategic support of breast cancer research possible.”

The BCRFA plans to invest over $1M from its 2019 fundraising efforts with the following goals: to encourage collaborative research among top researchers in Alabama in the field of breast cancer research; to help support basic research which can be emerge into translational research; to offer financial support to promising breast cancer research in Alabama helping fund initial research so that the project can support future funding from national funders; and to offer hope to those affected by breast cancer and ultimately save lives through breast cancer research.

The BCRFA has supported breast cancer research at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, Southern Research, University of Alabama, and CerFlux. The BCRFA’s investment in research initiatives across Alabama has a global, life-saving impact.
