Breast Cancer Research License Plate

November, 2007

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) received approval from the Legislative Oversight Committee on September 12, 2007 to start the pre-commitment process for the highly anticipated breast cancer research license plate in Alabama.

The license plate will cost residents of the state $50 to receive the specialty license plate with $41.25 benefitting the BCRFA.  This money will be used for breast cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“We are in the pre-commitment phase right now” says Mrs. Dolly O’Neal, Co-founder and Vice President of the Foundation.  We need every citizen of Alabama to show their support for those who have been touched by this disease.  It is such a powerful way to honor your mothers, sisters, friends and even men who have battled this disease.  There are nearly 3 million car tags in the state of Alabama we just need 1000 to have this tag produced.

“Residents can purchase their pre-commitments beginning November 1, 2007 through October 31, 2008.  We have one-year to receive the 1000 commitments.  However, if everyone who has been affected by breast cancer will purchase one commitment, we will see this tag on the street soon.  It’s imperative that everyone band together.  The money this tag will generate for research will save lives.   It’s up to you and I to make a difference, says Marion Walker, President of the BCRFA. “

Marketing for the tag has begun across the state.  Lamar Advertising has donated billboards in Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile.  Printing services have been donated by Birmingham Printing and Publishing, Donna Clark and many others.

“The state of Alabama needs this tag.  We have been contacted by survivors and family members of those who have battled and lost to honor their courageous fight with a car tag such as this.  It’s time for us all to “DO IT NOW”.   This is something every person in the state can do and feel like they are part of the cure,” says Mrs. O’Neal.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Question:  I just renewed my tag.  Do I have to wait until next year to get the pre-commitment?
Answer: No, the pre-commitment is separate from your tag renewal.  This is to show the state that we have at least 1000 supporters in the state.  They will not produce the tag without the 1000 pre-commitments.  We recommend that you don’t wait until you renew to buy the commitment.

Question:   How will I know when you have received the 1000 commitments?
Answer:  A notice will be sent to those who purchased the commitment.

Question:  Is it better for me to pick up my tag when it’s approved or at my annual renewal?
Answer:  That is up to the individual.  You can pick up your tag immediately when the notice is received.  However, if you pick up your tag immediately you will have to pay an additional $50 at your renewal.  (Example: If the tag is approved in February and you renew in March, it would be better to wait to pick it up at your March renewal to avoid paying another $50 specialty license tag fee.  If you wait until March, you will not have to pay until you renew for the next year.

Question:  What do I need to take with me to pick up my tag?
Answer: The DMV office will give you a copy of the pre-commitment form and a receipt.  Take both of these with you when the tag is available.

Question:  How can I personalize my breast cancer research license plate?
Answer:   When the 1000 commitments are purchased you can visit www.alabamainteractive.org/dorpt/UserHome.str .  The BCRFA license plate will be added to the drop down list.  You can reserve your plate message through their website.  Then visit the county office to turn in your pre-commitment receipt and place the order for the personalized tag.  You will get a 60-day temporary tag and your new tag will be mailed to you.

Question:  I work in a different county that I live.  Can I buy my commitment at another county office?
Answer:  No.  You must purchase your pre-commitment in the county in which you reside.

Question:  Do I need my pre-commitment paperwork and receipt when I pick up my tag?
Answer:  Yes.  Make sure you keep your paperwork from the DMV office in a safe location.  After the tag is produced you will need to have your paperwork with you to receive the tag.
