third annual belk private shopping night
“An overwhelming success”

Birmingham, Ala., November 6, 2008 — Belk at the Summit hosted the 3rd Annual Private Shopping Event to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama on Sunday, October 12, 2008.

The doors closed for normal business at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening and re-opened for the private shopping event at 6:30 p.m. At 6:15 p.m. a crowd of excited shoppers lined up to shop the latest fashions and benefit a life-saving cause.

“We quadrupled ticket sales at this year’s event thanks to the highly committed and deeply motivated committee of determined women. Holding the event at Belk’s Summit location, with its newly renovated space and its expanded high-end shopping, was an added bonus to shoppers. Both Belk and the Board of Directors consider the event an overwhelming success,” said Dianne Mooney, president of the BCRFA.

“This event is one of the highlights of our year as we reach out to the community to support the cause of raising money for breast cancer research,” said Joe Schmidt, store manager of Belk at The Summit. “Once again it has proven to be a big success for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama and a fun-filled evening for all who and attend. This is a great event for a great cause.”

Special touches were added to the 2008 event. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar provided “The Pink Lady” drink for all to sample, outstanding door prizes from Belk, along with other Summit Shops and restaurants, were given away to lucky shoppers through random drawings. Shoppers were entertained by “Goodfellas” Band. B&A Warehouse served delectable hors d’ oeuvres – among them, “Thanksgiving in a Cup,” along with other favorites.

“Thanks to this special partnership with Belk, Inc., our contributions to breast cancer research in Alabama are having a significant impact,” said Mooney. “In many instances the funds act as leverage in the acquisition of federal funding for major projects. When community support is present, grantors are more likely to provide major funding with the assurance that the community supports the work.”

The members of the 2008 Private Shopping Night Committee included Jennifer Andress, Nan Baldwin, Lynn Bland, Dr. Violeta Caceres, Donna Clark, Maria Norena-Forero, Julie Hill, Kate Kiefer, Dr. Helen Krontiras, Jeanie MacKenzie, Carolyn Maddox, Harris Thuston McCloud, Kim Mitchell, Dianne Mooney, Dolly O’Neal, Toni Reed, Lilette Robinson, Cindee Standridge, Keri Till, Mary Welden, Keli Lynch Wright and Michele Zakeri.

All of these women have been touched by breast cancer. Some have fought breast cancer themselves, and others have family members who have been affected by the disease. One in eight women will contract the disease in their lifetime, and commitment to help find a cure drives this important work.
