2nd Annual "Private Shopping Event" Raises Money and Awareness for Breast Cancer Research

November, 2007

The 2nd Annual “Private Shopping Event” hosted by Belk, Riverchase Galleria was a huge success, raising money and awareness for breast cancer research in Alabama.

Over 325 supporters of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama and Belk customers waited patiently for the doors to re-open at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2007 to take advantage of the store-wide discounts, free gift wrapping and entertainment by Goodfellas.

Nancy Trucks and the staff of Flower Trucks set the mood for the evening with beautiful tropical floral arrangements. Guests stopped at the door to admire the pink roses, blue hydrangea, and green Belles of Ireland. Upon entering the store, the view of holiday décor was breathtaking.   The store was exquisite with lighted arrangements and trees in hot pink, burgundy and gold. Shoppers quickly began taking advantage of the fabulous sales.

Guests gathered on the 2nd floor to enjoy the many delicacies prepared by B & A Warehouse Catering. Selections included stuffed mushrooms, cornbread dressing with smoked turkey, Artisian and flavored breads with selections of cheeses and Boursin and crab cheese cake with an assortment of crackers. Cucumber with herbed cream cheese, southern style chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwiches were the perfect pick up as guests strolled and gazed over the many choices of delectable foods that surrounded the atrium. Mini desserts of pumpkin pies, pecan tartlets, chocolate pies and apple muffins were a hit with the sweet lovers. Beverages were provided by Coca Cola Bottling Company, Alice White Wine and Birmingham Beverage.

Caesar Lamonaca, Manager of the Belk store welcomed guests and introduced Marion Walker, BCRFA President and Dolly O’Neal, Co-Founder of the Foundation. Both thanked everyone for attending and supporting breast cancer research. Marion expressed her gratitude to Belk for their generosity and hosting this event for a 2nd year.

Ms. Walker expressed her appreciation to the 2007 Shopping Committee which included Jennifer Andress, Nan Baldwin, Lynn Bland, Dr. Violeta Caceres, Donna Clark, Libby Webb Collier, Maibeth Deas, Susie Denson, Sara Dorfman, Staci Hand, Julie Hill, Kate Kiefer, Dr. Helen Krontiras, Jeanie MacKenzie, Carolyn Maddox, Kim Mitchell, Carolyn Nelson, Maria Norena-Forero, Mary Noel Sellers, Cindee Standridge and Joanice Thompson.

“Belk donated $30,000 to the BCRFA in October 2007 from proceeds of their Spring Beauty Works promotion. Money raised from the shopping event and Beauty Works promotion will be used for progressive research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center,” says Mrs. O’Neal. “We are so fortunate to have Belk’s support and believe in the BCRFA. They are not only helping to fund research for a cure, they are saving lives.”
